Visa Formalities

Foreigners living in Bosnia and Herzegovina on a temporary basis (internships, studies, work) must be registered in order to obtain a residence permit or a work permit.

Citizens of the European Union, States/Members of the Schengen Agreement and Andorra, Montenegro, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, Serbia, the Holy See/Vatican Switzerland and Brazil are exempted from visa requirements for stays less than 90 days. For stays over 90 days, obtaining a residence permit is required and the formalities are conducted by the Service for Foreigners at the Ministry of Security in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

• A visa can be issued only to an alien who possesses a valid passport whose validity exceeds the time of the visa for at least three months. The visa application is submitted in a form, which must be accurately and completely filled. (Application for visa - Form No.1)
• Short stay visa (visa C) to one, or more alien who enter and stay in the country, provided that there is no continuous stay, nor the total duration of successive stays in BiH which can be no longer than 90 days in the period of six months from the date of the first entry. Short stay visa is issued for one or more entries in BiH, and is issued with a validity period not exceeding one year. Exception may be granted for a period longer than one year, if it is in the interest of BiH, which is decided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after having obtained the consent of the Service for Foreigners. Short stay visa is issued for business, education, training, or similar purposes, for travel, or other travel for private purposes, for travel to political, scientific, cultural, sport, religious or other events, and travel for other reasons for short-term stays.
• Long term visa (D visa) allows an alien to enter and stay in the country for a period of six months within one year from the date of the first entry. Long term visa is issued for one or more entries in BiH. It is issued for a period not exceeding one year. Exceptionally, a long term visa can be issued for a period longer than one year, if it is in the interest of BiH, which is decided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after having obtained the consent of the Service for Foreigners.
• Outside of BIH, the request is submitted to the BiH Service for Foreigners’ Affairs through diplomatic and consular representing offices of BiH, and BiH directly to the competent organizational unit of the Service for Foreigners. • More information about the issuing of visas, required documentation, as well as diplomatic and consular missions of Bosnia and Herzegovina in which you can apply for a visa, you can find on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
